Kit lens upgrade conundrum

Hi everyone

I want to upgrade my kit lens and I am unsure what lens to get. I take mainly three types of pictures:

1) landscape pictures

2) pictures in the city of both building/squares/streets as well as individual objects/persons
3) indoor photography
4) city photography at night

I find that I can sometimes do with some additional zoom at the long end (mainly due to 2) and sometimes, when the light is bad I feel I lack a fast lens (3 + 4).

Also, is it worth keeping the kit lens? Or should I convert it to cash and save up for a second lens?

I own a Nikon D5000, so AF-S type lenses have a preference. Please advice.
