Difference between 75-300 and 55-250

You seem very knowledgable !! In easy terms can you tell me the difference between a EF75-300/ f4-5.6 III lens and an EF 55-250/f4-5.6 IS lens. . . the main thing being the "IS". . . and of course the price. .. the III is $100 cheaper than the IS lens. Thanks for your time in explaining this to me.

The 75-300 is an older design, and is designed for full frame 35 mm cameras, but will, of course work on digital cameras, both crop (like the Rebels, the XXDs, the 7D, the 1D) and full frame. The 55-250 is a much newer design, and is specifically designed for crop cameras with a 1.6 crop (Rebels, XXD line from 20D onwards, and 7D). The 55-250 is smaller, lighter, and much better optically than the 75-300, which is quite mediocre by modern standards. Even without the IS, the 55-250 would be easily worth $100 more than the 75-300. The IS is the icing on the cake.
