I don't think AA would ever say that. As far as I know, he used 35mm cameras as his "P&S", large format was his main camera where he could get the highlights and all the details as he wanted. So yes, he probably didn't care that much about the tiny detail when he was using his "P&S" cameras, especially not with Tri-X in them.
