I haven't seen anyone mention m4/3 cameras yet. The IQ coming from these cameras is excellent.

If you want a fabulous combo that is much lighter than a DSLR with one or two lenses, go try out a Panasonic GF1 or Olympus E-P1 with the Panasonic 20mm f1.7 and the Panasonic 45-200 lens. The IQ will amaze you and your shoulder will thank you after walking around in some remote city all day. And then there is the smaller bag you will carry as well.

One more thing to think about is a DSLR stands out in a crowd when the bad guys are looking for a target to steal. The small M4/3 cameras just won't look that impressive to most thieves.
