Photographing Mavericks surfing tomorrow - tips?

I am shooting Mavericks surfing competition tomorrow. Not in any official capacity - I do not do sports often enough, but I will be on a speedboat, close to the action. I have not done surfing before.

As far as equipment I have my D700 70-200mm VRII and 1.7TC II. I am not sure if I will take anything wider... Do you think I should?

What are the settings that people most often use? I guess as any other water shutter should be up in the 1000s? Should be a clear day, in any case. Do you think I should bother with the polarizer? Any special considerations when metering?

Any tips would be appreciated!
