Why not Nikkor 16-35 f/2,8?

I think - it's only Nikon marketing.

New Nikkor 16-35 f/4 VR isn't cheap lens (only $400-500 less than 14-24, 24-70, 17-35). And weights only a margin less than 17-35. So why the new lens it is not f/2,8 (with IQ of 14-24)?

As we see from MTF graphs, Nikkor 16-35 at 16mm & f/4 is far from IQ of Nikkor 14-24 at 14mm&f/2,8 (in corners). I think it has far better performance 1-2 stops slower (but hey - the 17-35 is so). But many people (me too) who pay $$$$ for the lens want max. performance at any aperture and FL (and Nikon CAN make such a lens).

I bet all pros and most enthusiast amateurs (like me) would buy Nikkor 16-35 f/2,8 w/o VR and with excellent IQ wide open for $1700-1800 instead of Nikkor 16-35 f/4 VR for $1260 with good IQ wide open. Of course, VR may be good feature, but I don't think it will give 4-stops gain in WA range + it can't stop motion and and gives worse DOF control (one of great possibilities of fast WA lens is min. focus distance less than 0,3 m - where you can capture close main object and blur everything else - like with fast 50/85mm primes, but with interesting WA effect).

So - what is the main reason of not producing Nikkor 16-35 f/2,8. It's MARKETING!

Nikkor 16-35 f/4 VR is not so interesting for most pros (may be only for landscapers). So they have to spend ~$3500 for great 14-24 + 24-70 combo instead of one great lens for $1700 (+ m.b. 50 f/1,4 for $400). Plus if Nikon makes great 16-35 f/2,8, 14-24 will become uninteresting for most potential buyers (except only some interior shooters).

So I think they will produce Nikkor 16-35 f/2,8 (or something like that) in about 3-4 years as they sell a lot of 14-24 & 16-35 f/4. Then they will give us the best lens (in terms of IQ, useful range and f/2,8) so they could sell a lot of $1700-1800 lenses again.
Sadly but it's true.

P.s.: (Deep in my soul) I hope Nikkor 16-35 f/4 VR will be (is) great FF f/4 lens. Can't wait for pics from it - sa it has most useful range for me.
