D300 and AF-ON - is it worth it?

Hi,

Ever since my P&S days, I've always used the half-down shutter release method to lock focus/exposure and reframe. This seems so natural to me that I've continued to use this method with my D300. However, in reading Thom Hogan's Complete Guide To The Nikon D300 (for the umpteenth time it seems, lots of info there), he seems to advocate using the AF-ON instead of the half-down shutter release method to lock focus. In reading this and trying it out, it does seem to do what he says, but I'm curious as to what other, more experienced photographers than myself think about this method. I shoot mainly portrait, macro and landscape, so most of the time my subjects are not in fast motion.

BTW, my previous SLR was the Nikon F2 that I got in high school (!). The D300 is my first SLR of any kind since then.

Thanks for your comments.

Michael
