SB-800 vs. SB-900

Aside from the money one might save, is there a technical reason why one should buy an SB-800 instead of a SB-900? Right now, given used prices for SB-800 units, I am seeing little justification price-wise to go for it rather than just picking up a new SB-900. I am also nervous about picking up a used unit, since I'm assuming it has a limited lamp life? IOW, after so many firings, the bulb/lamp(s) will need replacement/repair, and I don't know of a way to tell how many times a flash unit has been fired, in the way one can read shutter actuation count on a camera.

It's easy to argue about equipment and technique, but hard to argue with a good photograph -- and more difficult to capture one .
