HDD warranties to decrease to 1-yr (some exceptions) starting Oct 1.

Even though the WD1200JB (120 GB, 8 MB cache) will still have a 3-yr warranty, I ordered one today. $159 (shipped) at Newegg, OEM.

Granted, the new Serial-ATA drives are coming a bit later this year. Larger and faster. But they'll require new controllers.

I have got me eye on a Seagate (Cheetah), IBM or Fuzitsu 15k rpm SCSI drive to add as a fourth drive just for images. For most, warranties are still 5 years.

SCSI used to command a HEAVY premium in prices. When I built my new machine, I didn't even put in a SCSI card. A lot of that was because Plextor (my CD-RW of choice) is no longer available in SCSI (other than old models).

I now have:

two WD-60 GB in a RAID-0 array
one WD-100 GB
one WD-120 GB (just ordered)
(all above are 7200 rpm)
one external 120 GB Firewire drive (5400 rpm)

Plus a CD-R/RW
and a DVD-R/RAM

(and of course, a floppy -- lol)

Still demands a $ premium but-- I have both 10K and 7.2K drives and the 10k drive is a sreamerrrrrrrr. Plus I have a dual CPU machine which can best use multiple SCSI drives.

This is the drive that I currently have PS and the Scratch file on. I want to get the 15k drive for my many pics. Based on my previous performance testing, I will assume that the 8 mb R/W buffer and 50% faster rotational speed will be awesome.

BTW, I also have a server ( I use for back ups, printer and cable modem sharing) that has a 60 GB WD dirve that I use to back up all pics + I burn CD-R's of the best ones. (just in case, read as insurance).
