An FPGA couldn't touch the ASIC implementation for cost, speed, power, or complexity/function. An FPGA has its proper places in the world, but this is not one of them.

if it's an ASIC, we'll have to wait at least till the next generation D4...

unless the (prudently design) ASIC is controlled by SW.
and assuming that Nikon are agreeably inclined...
