I'm sure stacking is useful for reducing noise. I'm not sure how useful it would be in replacing signal that has been flattened by a previously applied blunt instrument, no matter how many images you stack.

Stacking increases noise because each sensor read carries a read noise penalty; four reads of 1/8 sec has twice the read noise of one read at 1/2 sec. The way one gains from stacking is when one stacks a number of high ISO images rather than taking one long exposure at low ISO, and the decrease in read noises in electrons as a function of ISO is enough to compensate the multiple exposure penalty.
