TOKINA vs. Sigma vs. Tamron

Ok, thanks for the info given thus far. What seems certain is that Nikkor will almost always be at the top, and that Quantaray is the lens that you throw at the thief trying to kidnap your subject.

Maybe I should've phrased this as, how do Tokina, Sigma & Tamron compare to each other, both in build quality and optics? Even just a rating of 1, 2, 3 would be a help.

I've only used slow glass (18-135mm & 55-200mmVR) & a 50mm 1.8 prime so far, all being Nikkor. Having experienced what 1.8 gives me vs 3.5, I'm now wanting to move up to fast glass, but want to get the best "bang for buck". Long range is simple- the local shop had a used Nikkor 80-200mm w/ a guarantee for only $500 over Christmas, and I'll wait til another one comes around. But wide-angle- well, we'll save that can of worms for another thread altogether.
