Hi All,

I took a bunch of IR shots at a local park yesterday. We had a day with lots of puffy clouds, so it was great for IR pictures. I've only processed a few so far, but I wanted to share them. Here are a few of my favs:

These were all taken with the F707 using just a Hoya R72 (it wasn't too bright out) in Nightshot mode.

I also used Contrast Masking on some of them, which I've never done with my IR shots before. Let me know what you all think.

Hope you like them.

James,

Real nice shots. I'm a sucker for reflections in water. The contrast mask seems to have worked well and given the shots some drama. I get similar results using a plugin called "Mr. Contrast" from flamingpear.

James,

Like Harry, I just love those reflections. These shots are very very good. My only criticism would be that there is so much to look at, they are hard to focus on. With so many clouds and trees above, and again reflected upside down in the water, it's pretty busy. I also agree about the contrast masking. It looks great :-)

Amazing James..I am planning to get IR filters ...you & the IR Pros here are my encouragement...

James,

These look great, where'd you take them? Your in the Dallas area right? You said it was too bright for Night shot, so I'm assuming you took this in Manual? Also, I've only used contrast masking to lighten a picture, bring out detail in the shadows. How did you implement caontrast masking?

I'm just full of questions, keep up the good work.

Hi Max,

Glad you liked the shots. There is a great article on Contrast Masking here:

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/contrast_masking.shtml

It can explain it better then I ever could. It's a good thing to try on your pics.

Thanks,

James

Hi Harry,

Thanks! Glad you liked them. I've never heard of Mr Contrast. Where did you get that from? Does it do contrast masking for you?

Thanks,

James

Hi Steve,

Yes, I think the Contrast Masking is actually to fault with that. It REALLY defined the contrast between the light and dark areas. :) I think what I need to try is lowering the Opacity of the mask layer so it's not so intense.

Thanks for the feedback!

Hi,

Yes, I am in the Dallas area. I live in Garland, but work in Richardson. The park where I shot these is located just East of Belt Line and Coit. It's not a very big park, but I like to shoot there.

I actually took all of these in Nightshot/Auto. Normally I have to use several stacked ND filters to darken the image, but it wasn't too bright yesterday so I could just use my Hoya R72 filter.

In the pics where I used a contrast mask, I copied the pic and pasted it as a new layer, converted the layer to B&W, Inverted the B&W layer, applied a Gaussian Blur at 10 strength, set Opacity to Overlay and 100%, then finally flattened. On some pics, it didn't really work. On others, I liked the effect.

Glad you liked the pics!

James, these are very nice! I especially like the first one. Contrast masking really seems to make a real impact on IR photographs.

Enjoy your weekend.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the feedback! I now want to go back to some of my old IR shots and try Contrast Masking on them also. :)

You have a good weekend also.

Nice shots and well edited. Here's one I took in a park, plenty of contrast masking...

Hi Jaysam,

Thanks! I hear you on the haze. For the last two weeks it has been nasty around here. We finally had some good storms come through and clean everything up, so I had to get out and shoot while the shooting was good. :)
