I have 3 dslr's and I use an Oly C-750uz (4meg) for outdoor backup

Mine did produce artifacts at 400ISO that 'NeatImage' could not get rid of. Artifacts also appeared at base ISO when I had the audacity to set maximum saturation and contrast at the same time. The following shot I have re-processed time and again, because I cannot repeat it:

Compared to the later SP-550UZ the C-750 produced broad sharpening, which some people clearly like a lot. But that is at the expense of detail.

I take it often when I just want to have a camera with me should I

So for you the form factor is more important than maximum zoom range. In that case you might look at the Canon SX120IS. It has the same zoom range as the C-750, but 10MP will give you smaller noise particles, and VGA movies at 30fps are bound to look better than the 320x240-15fps movies which the C-750 dished up.

If you can tolerate a flash that pops up regardless, you also might consider the Canon SX200IS.
