I went for a walk around Oakland Lake yesterday. I spotted a swan swimming along the shore and decided to give chase. After 30 minutes of stalking the swan and firing off about 100 photos, I realized what a wonderful nature shoot I had just had.

These photos were taken with my G1 + B-300 at ISO 50 using manual exposure and metering by eye while hand holding the camera. Comments and suggestions welcome.

I like your swan. What a pretty creature. The closeups are fantastic. Dont like the first one as much. Really like the reflection in the second.

Thank you Chuck. I like the reflections in the first one and it sets the stage for the others.

Hi Morris,

What a joy I had looking at this series, with each image I must laugh louder, superb job, I could see you running there in my imagination. Fantastic caption for this series and all pictures are clean and detailed and well exposed. Great fun Morris and well done.

With very kind regards,

come on now morris, you're expecting comments on swan pictures!! I would expect at least a couple of action shots of the swans showing that stong teritorial behavious they are famous for!

Seriously though - nice pics:
  1. 1 is like most of my nature shots, (excepting that mine are usually bluriery - those critters do keep moving.)
  2. 2 nice, but I think I might have preffered it without the branch on the waterline.
  3. 3 loved it, nice composition, colors reflection. For me, the best of the set.
  4. 4 & #5 nice sharp pics, but don't especially appeal to me.
Nice set of pictures,
Richard.
come on now. These are better than that!

Morris,

The close-ups - from 3 onwards - are excellent. Photo 2 is marred slightly by the branch which disturbs the peaceful atmosphere and reflection; photo 1, the scene-setter, is a bit too distant to draw the viewer in.

In all, a pleasing set of images. If you are within range of the pond, it would be tempting to re-shoot the opening scene, simplifying the landscape elements and increasing the emphasis on the swan.

The exposures are bang-on.

Hi Morris nice pics. Swans are a great subject and your closeup pics are really sharp. The colour in your pics is interesting to me, I like its quality. BTW I looked at these yesterday but just starting my computer this morning the swan in the last one looks a little green which is probably my monitor warming up so ignore that.

I just wanted to mention Morris that near me instead of stalking them you can just bring bread crumbs .. then they stalk you !! :-)

Thank you Mark. The green in the shadow is a reflection of the leaves. Yes, bread crumbs do work, but this was done the harder way.
