I see.

If you take a photo of a box, for instance, and put it in the bottom corner of the image, in focus, the center is still the center of the image, no matter what's in focus If you use the lines of the box to plot the center of the image, then that's the giveaway. If you get down low enough to keep the box square, then it's in the center of the image. Of course, like you said, a tilt and shift would be an exception to this...
