Canon G11 video is further limited by FIXED focus

Just brought home a brand new Canon G11 (B&H $449 USD) and discovered to my horror that the video is fixed focus. Focus is set at the time the shutter button is pressed (to begin video recording) and there it stays regardless of any recomposition and/or subject movement while recording. Using the video functionality as I normally would do results in varying out-of-focus results.

The lack of HD video and a limit of 640x480 video recording I came to accept before I chose to buy the camera, but the lack of continuous focusing (as I have on my aging Canon S5) is unbelievable. I had planned to use the newly returned flip-out LCD screen mostly when taking brief videos (which help capture the atmosphere of events like weddings, birthdays or holiday travel), but I fear this a not a camera up to the task.

When Canon decided to 'deprioritize' video on the G11, they sure did just that.
