What are little lenses made of? (guts and innards and oh my!)

After some unfortunate bumpy roads in Southern Laos about a year ago, I finally decided to dedicate the remains of my Nikkor 16-85mm VR to science. Here are the results.

AF-S Nikkor 16-85mm 1:3.5-5.6G ED VR

After the first screws on the bottom, the mount comes off.

That's a lot of knobs and screws and cogs and circuitry. Even two circuit boards doing their thing (top and right side).

Removing the circuitry, plastic casing, plastic focusing ring and rubber elastic zoom ring, the lens elements are house inside a mix of metal and plastic. Somebody's written "RAI" on there.

Here are the lens elements and the aperture ring, starting with the large front element.

Opposite side.

My surgeon friend still has some problems patching patients up after an operation.

And here's what the whole thing is made of (save for one piece of plastic casing). Lots of screws and circuitry for this lens.

And a bonus of the good doctor at work. Unfortunately our subject did not survive the operation.
