I mostly agree here, but I want to point out one concern. I own the 28-75/2.8 Tamron and it gives great pictures, but it is a little slow to focus on moving targets and I have missed some great shots because of this with my 3 year old.

Keep in mind no lens can do everything. I love my Tamron but it is best combined with some USM/HSM equipped lenses for moving children. If money were no object, I would have a 17-55/2.8 Canon and I am personally saving for one now.
