Well, there is the Sigma 24mm f/1.8. It isn't exactly small when compared to the Nikon 24mm f/2.8, but it does seem to generally be well liked as an alternative to the Nikon 24. Unfortunately, it is hard to find a good comparison of the two for IQ.

As with most Sigma lenses, test your copy thoroughly for front/back focusing and other QC issues. It's about $130 more than the Nikon.
