I got a 7D as a wedding anniversary gift a couple of minutes ago ( I normally shoot with a 1Ds-II)

The following are the first pics I took..No sharpening just resized for web after 100% cropping...and of course DPP

But noise is terrible in this am I doing something wrong ? 2.8, 1/13, ISO 400 on a tripod...70-200 IS USM

The shots appear to be very underexposed. Underexposed shots will have more noise.

Send it back to the person that gave it to you (wife?). If you can't get a good image after a couple of minutes you never will.

I am being sarcastic to a point and I am sorry it probably sounded a little rude. First off, your histogram indicates that the image is probably a little underexposed - a little more to the right would probably have helped. Beyond that there are a few things to remember, the 7D isn't a 1DsII, at 100% under relatively low lighting with the exposure indicated in your histogram, you will notice some noise at a 100% crop. If you print large enough to fill a wall, your audience will notice the noise too.

I do have two questions - was HTP on? was ALO on? If ALO was on when you shot the image what happens when you turn it off in DPP?

I tend to think that its also a tad underexposed.

Let me make a suggestion. Set your camera up on a tripod and bracket a few exposures of the same scene. Since your color balance is a bit off, you probably need to be sure that you've got a good white balance so that your results from exposure bracketing aren't affected.

I've been eyeing this camera as an upgrade to my 20D.

Best of luck and let us know how you turn out.

Thanks everyone for taking time to respond.

This was just a casual shot in the CA mode I think. That was how the camera was positioned when I opened it. I saw the hist too and noticed the u/e. But my Q is, the noise on the skin surrounding eyebrow has a weird green/red noise unlike the Ds-II, don't you think ?

I don't know about ALO and other things yet. I will try again tonight and will post the results; hopefully better ones :)

I have to admit, I haven't tried CA mode so i don't know how well it works but you will see more noise in an underexposed image regardless. As for the ALO/HTP settings, both those modes "process" JPGS in the camera - raw files will be altered when loaded into DPP for ALO...I suspect they could contribute to some image quality problems in some cases. I have them both turned off on my camera.
