Specific question on 70-200 f/2.8 VR

I've shot all of the lenses as well.

The Canon F4 version was very nice, but F4 makes it much weaker for portrait work. So if you plan to shoot people I much prefer the 2.8.

The old version of the Nikon 70-200 was a bit better in center sharpness and bokeh than Canon's, but both were nice. I just felt that the 70-200 made portrait magic on DX or FX.

The new version of the 70-200 is an even further refinement beyond the old versions from Nikon or Canon. After owning the F4 version, all it was good at was being sharp. That's not enough. You need 2.8 for exquisite subject isolation. The Nikon's portrait abilities are well established and the new version is even better.

There's no substitute for fast glass.
