I would still recommend the D5000 to first-timers. A friend that ended up getting the D5000 picked up my D90 after he had the D5000 for about a month, having taken a thousand or so shots, was still baffled by the D90's controls and information overload.

The D40, D60 and D5000 make learning so easy. I know I would have been throughly intimidated by the D90 going in cold, but the D60 allowed me a radical learning curve. As a bonus, I now have a spare/second camera for the situations I need one.
