Isn't anyone else out there a fan of the 707's EVF?

It is a very helpful feature if, like me, you use bi-focals and prefer holding at eye-level. After all, what's more important in a camera than the view-finder? Apart from comfort, it uses less power than the 707's LCD, and is easier to focus....Seems like a big step forward to me.

And yet it seems most reviewers relegate a good EVF to a low spot on the 'desirable features' list.

Speaking personally, for what it's worth (Yeah! Not much! :), I don't think I'd have a dig. camera if it weren't for that lovely viewfinder on my 707. Just an individual thing, I suppose.

Any chance the U-10 might get one?

I've had my 707 for 2 weeks,I was going to wait for the 717,but all the problems people had with the 707 when it first came out,I was not going to wait, the chances that I would have on getting a good camera (707)with no problems would be very high,so thats why I did not wait for the 717,I dont think that the 717 is a worthy upgrade if you allready have a 707,but if you dont have a 707 then a 717 is a great idea, but back to your question about the EVF,I must admit its one of the best EVF's I've seen on any Digital Camera, its just as good as the EVF on my Sony camcorder (DCR-PC5) with is brilliant,I've allways been a fan of the EVF,my last 2 digicams did not have an EVF,I must admit they are still very usable in bright conditions, much, much better than a normal viewfinder.

Never use mine.

I like the sneak attack by taking picts with the camera near my
waist and the sound turned off.
Just tried it and..surprise... you have a point. It is clearer than I expected.

This is helpful as I was looking for a compact 2.0 MP, and could not find one with a good EVF. Maybe a swivel-body, like Coolpix2500 would serve my purpose. Certainly more comfortable than holding a foot-and-a-half in front of my face.

Yes! When I bought the 707 the EVF and IR capability were the two required items on my list.

Well not to take anything away from your usage, since it does benfit you, but yech, I just hate using the squint finders. I like being able to use both eyes from a comfortable position. Now this may be because of my usage, I don't hand hold the camera if I can help it, almost always on a tripod, so that may contribute to my use of the LCD as well.

You know of course that you run the risk of having your chums put black ink on the eye cup and having sport with you hahahaha. Well at least that is what happens in the movies hehehe.

I use the EVF all the time outdoors... it is much better than the LCD in bright light conditions. I find I don't miss the subtle icons, such as the dreaded 'left the macro enabled' icon, or the WB icons.

I could not use this camera without the EVF... top priority.

Same thing here.

I always use the EVF when outdoors in bright light... It is more than a desirable feature indeed.

I always use it when I am handholding the camera and tend to use the lcd when it is on the tripod. However if there is a lot going on around me I will use it even when mounted on the tripod.

I couldn't agree with you more. That was the single biggest thing which kept me away from the 505 when I bought the S70. Knowing that the image on the 707 EVF is 99% of the frame compared to who knows what on the S70 optical viewfinder makes it that much better.

--Interesting point about using both eyes; If you have one eye tremendously 'dominant', (like me), EVF is a natural......I can see(!) advantage to using the LCD at waist-level or on a tripod; But for the rest..........

Is there such a thing as a Compact Dig. with a good EVF? I haven't been able to find one.

The email I posted a couple days ago summarizes by feeling about the EVF:
-----------
A friend lent me his 707 while he's on vacation (with another camera.) > My regular camera's an OLY 2100UZ.
My vision isn't great and at times it is very difficult to see through the > viewfinder to focus. Yes, I have adjusted the diopter setting.
I shoot the majority of pics in portrait mode(MEANS ORIENTATION) (for notecards I print), but

when I turn the 707 sideways to shoot pics outdoors, the viewfinder > turns so dark that I can't see to compose/focus.
Using the LCD isn't much help either because it just isn't sharp enough to > tell when the shot's in focus.
I don't have this problem with my uzi. Can you offer any advice?
---------

I do have bifocals, and have to wear sunglasses in bright light. Since much of my photography is outdoors, I don't know if I can use this camera without some kind of solution for the problem. Suddenly I'm shooting fuzzy photos, when I can see to shoot. Check out my galleries to see I'm quite capable of getting good shots when I can see thru the EVF!

rr,

I have to agree. At least for me, the EVF is a god-send. It was also one of the reasons I bought the 707. The LCD is OK for waist-level shots, but I prefer to use the EVF even when my 707 is mounted on a tripod. I'm sure it doesn't hurt that I'm far-sighted and have light sensitive eyes. That EVF sure blocks out all reflections and while not a true optical viewfinder, it certainly delivers a sharp picture. I also find that eye-to-the-viewfinder (EVF) is a very stable shooting position.

--Linda, I hope someone knowledgeable hears your plea... I don't have that problem, but I wonder if you have a polariser on the lens possibly interfering with your sunglasses. (Easy to check). Otherwise I have to think there is something wrong with the camera.
