stdio lighting advice

Hi, just a quick bit of advice if I may...............

I have 3 bowens x 500, 2 brollies and 1 largish softbox. I have done a fair bit of white background work using a sheet as a backdrop.

My question is that I still end up faffing at the start of a shoot to get the background to 'Blink' on the screen.

I tend to use a light either side facing the backdrop, and then the soft box to the front.

Any advice on how to burn out the backdrop, does it make a diffirence how far the brollys are from the lights, best distance for the lights from the backdrop, or should I use the lights without brollys and aim direct on the sheet?

All views gratefully recieved,

Thanks
