I too acquired my 18-70DX with a D70, used it with the D80 and now the D300s. It is a gem of a lens. I nearly sold it for a 16-85VR, but the IQ of the 18-70 is to all intents and purposes the same, it's half a stop faster, and it’s cheaper and lighter. I did not see any merit in changing it. However, I doubt it could compete against the 17-55 f2.8, but for me they are apples and oranges. Different cost, weight and IQ. If you need that standard of IQ, need its low light capabilities and have the budget then I would get it. But back to the 18-70, it suits me fine. I pair it with a 70-300VR, which share the same filters and which combined are neither too heavy nor too bulky for travel and they deliver excellent IQ.

Hope that helps.
