I'm afraid these EVF-pushers will get their way and have OVFs disappear, despite their superiority for most situations

Do you realize how subjective that statement is?

You're sold on OVFs. You see them as "superior for most situations".

That's because they are.

As far as I can tell OVFs (compared to a fast, high resolution EVF) might have one advantage. Tracking a fast moving subject.

Which is about 50-75% of my photography, and most others too whether they know it or not (kids, sports, wildlife, basically everything but landscape, architecture and still-life). Things happen fast, sometimes even with landscape shots. Light changes quickly, you might want to get a quick three-shot pano before it changes too much, or you might have the sun just barely hidden or peaking out behind something and want to catch it at just the right spot.

They're also superior because of the mirror which allows PD AF. That allows vastly improved AF performance.
