My thinking is ... don't buy a lens that is a jack of all trades but a master of none but rather buy the proper lens that will do the best job.

I have a D90 which came with an 18-105. I think I will compliment my camera bag with a 70-300 zoom and a 10-24 for wide angle shots.
Am I learning something here????

I have the 18-200mm VR, 18-70mm and 70-300mm VR lenses. I brought the 18-70 and 70-300 with me on a recent trip to Beijing & Shanghai and I must say I wished I had brought the 18-200mm as a walk-around lens instead of the 18-70. While the 18-70 did suffice most of the time, there were a few instances when I missed shots cos I had to change lenses to get longer shots. Changing lenses in the middle of a big crowd (while watching the flag-lowering ceremony at Tiananmen Square and on the Great Wall) was, at best, slightly traumatizing cos I was concerned about people bumping into me and causing me to drop a lens. The additional range ont eh 70-300 did help at the flag lowering ceremony though.

A jack-of-all-trades lens can really be a master in its own domain (i.e. convenience), too.
