Birder's resoltuion comparison 5DM2/50D/7D

The following is a composite of 3 images taken using the Canon 600mm f/4 lens using the Canon 5D Mark II, 50D and 7D. All 3 images were taken at ISO 800, mirror lockup and a remote. RAW images were converted using ACR, converted to grayscale.

The purpose of the test was to determine the resolving power of all three cameras in a focal-length-limited situation. In other words, when photographing a bird or wildlife most of the time you cannot just walk up to the subject and take its picture. You have to take the picture from where you stand.

This is a different scenario than photographing a person's portrait in which you can walk up to the subject and frame appropriately.

Photographic tests found here on DP review and Imaging Resource crop the subject matter identically. These tests are useful, but not 100% relevant to photographing wildlife where you are limited by distance.

The images were resized to equal size for comparison sake. From left to right: 5D Mark II, 50D and 7D:
