It just says "damaged or unsupported format".
the raw's from my a300 imports just fine..

Any solution?!

The software doesn't support it yet. It is past time when all companies should switch to an open, standard raw format such as DNG so that this problem of software not supporting cameras goes away.

I do agree with you, but I do not think Sony, or the other "big"brands will switch to an open standard soon! I hope the EU (Nely Kroes) will make them use DNG but I think she is to bussy to call Microsoft to order to do this part of her job....

oh dammit.. This is one thing i did not see coming haha..

Well.. I'll be patiently waiting for Lightroom 2.6 then.. and i'll be shooting some jpeg in the meantime.. just... - annoying - this is the one bad thing about having a totally new camera.
thanks for your help guys!

I thoroughly agree - I cannot see how anyone wins by constantly needing to update a thousand other programs because a new camera is out. It appears that the A850 raw files are identical to the A900, yet you can only upload by changing a file header to fool the software into thinking you have an A900. Silly, wasteful, stoopid - most especially when DNG is available. This firmware update should be nearly painless, you'd think.

On the surprising side of RAW conversions: I had taken some shots several months ago with a Casio P505 in 'maintenance mode' where it can shoot RAW. I had totally forgotten I did this.. but Picasa didn't, and now I can look at the images. Thanks, Picasa, and hope the Alpha updates are coming soon there too.

is DNG an open standard or an adobe standard? DxO does not work with DNG are there other RAW converters that support DNG (apart from Adobe software)?

ACR cannot support my a500 ARW file, either!!
And I've tried the open-source UFraw, it cannot read, either!!

According to ACR website, a500 and a550 are indeed not supported, I suppose these two models are too new! Therefore, maybe the only choice is to wait for new revision of ACR...

So what are your thoughts on the A500? did you own an a300/350/700 before?

Sorry but DNG is not a open standard. It is an Adobe proprietary protocol. It is OWNED by Adobe, so by definition it is not open.

DNG is not an open standard, it is an publicly available standard, copyrighted by Adobe. Anyone can get a royaltee-free license from Adobe, but Adobe can also revoke that license. The specifications and development of the DNG format is ultimately decided by Adobe.

One thing is certain; DNG is not an open standard. Adobe has a firm grip on everything regarding DNG.

What's that noise?

DNG is not open, but is a proprietary format from Adobe, so Microsoft have nothing to do with this. Plus, from the manufacturers' standpoints, it makes no sense to use another proprietary format they lose control of (Adobe can then do what they want with their format). So I don't think this will ever happen, they will want to keep control of their own formats.

use HEX program, low level edit A550 RAW file, change header from A550 -> A350, then it will work for the time being, wait for Adobe update.
Or
use Sony Image convertor 3.1

Can you please explain further on how to make this HEX edit? what files to open/ what programs to use?

A few facts to help this discussion.

1. DNG has the same status as TIFF: both are free-to-use specifications owned by Adobe. How many people worry about TIFF?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TIFF

2. Adobe stated in September: "there are no known intellectual property encumbrances or license requirements for ... DNG":
http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/cinemadng/

(The published license appears to be primarily for reassurance - in effect, it says "it is irrelevant whether there are any patents because everyone has permission to use it anyway". But I've never found a patent on DNG, nor have I seen one identified by anyone else).

3. About 38 camera models (past and present), from about 12 camera manufacturers, use DNG as their raw image format. Or, in the case of Pentax, about 5 of their models (past and present) give the user an option about whether to use PEF or DNG. On average, a new camera model that writes DNG is launched about every 7 weeks. (September was hectic - at least 4 new camera models from 3 manufacturers!)

4. Adobe have submitted DNG to ISO for use during ISO's revision of ISO 12234-2 (TIFF/EP).

Separate reports say: "WG 18 is revising the two-part standard (ISO 12234), which addresses digital camera removable memory. The ... revision of Part 2 will add DNG into TIFF/EP"; and the revision "... currently includes two "interoperability-profiles," "IP 1" for processed image data, using ".TIF" extension, and "IP 2" for "raw" image data, ".DNG" extension".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TIFF/EP#Timeline_for_development_and_revision

5. About 220+ software products support DNG in some way. The raw image formats of about 230+ camera models can currently be converted to DNG.

6. Any manufacturer who uses DNG in-camera obvious does not give any control to Adobe! What can Adobe do to control the camera manufacturer? If the camera writes version 1.1.0.0 (as many do), Adobe can't change that version of the specification - it is already published and frozen. Adobe's only control at the moment is that they are the only ones who can issue new specifications under the trademark "DNG". But anyone else can use the details of DNG and do whatever they like under a different name!

7. DNG is written by camera models of various types: conventional dSLRs, compact cameras, rangefinder cameras, digital backs (both color and monochrome), panorama cameras, an underwater camera, a digiscope with a built-in camera, and at least one movie camera.

use a hex editor to change A-850 to A-900 in the header info.

if you are not a IT person, you may not understand this.. then skip it.

This is what I did for my D700 Raw file, I use hex editor to change D700 to D3 in the header info of each RAW file, then open with older version of Capture NX.
Someone did this in Sony A-850 -> A-900 ARW file, it work fine.

..well i use lightroom to do quite a lot of touching up :)

I did'nt quite understand how to chamge hex data? - what programs do I need to D/L ?

Thanks, Barry. Several people posted misinformation in this thread and I thought about tracking down some of that stuff, but didn't have time. I'm glad you did.

A Hex edit won't work with the a550. It was possible with the a850 only because basically the raw files were the same as the ones from the a900. You will have to wait for a LR update.
