Looks like we will not have to wait for PMA.

Canon will not be there, but they will be at CES in January 2010. If they they don't show up with a 60D there, whats the next available show? Or will they announce it without being at a show? Have they ever announced between shows?

Taking pictures is easy, making them art is hard. (al nunley)

There will be a major show Oct 22-24 at the Jacob Javits Center in New York. Canon will have a major presence there along with most of the other major manufacturers of not only cameras but also software and the many supporting products related to photography.

It's called PhotoPlus Expo. I've attended the last few years and each show has been spectacular.

Life is what happens while you're making other plans

I think they will announce at CES :)

The only question is how much of the 7D will be brought down, and do I wait?

. . . Why shouldn't the 7D be considered the successor to the 50D?

Greg--

Not so sure I see this quite as clearly as you do. I think there's room between the 7D and the 500D for a lower price point and 50D+ functionality... perhaps somewhat improved AF and a few refinements. The primary benefit would not so much be a huge step up in capabilities (which I think the 7D has done a fairly good job of), but instead delivering 40D/50D like capabilities at a lower price.

Why does that scenario seem so crazy?
More likely they will announce a realistic product like the rumored 1500D if they announce anything at all.

How would a 60D even make sense given Canon’s marketing scheme?

Is it possible I've read something anywhere, from anyone expecting news about an MkIV release during the event?

Nikon has 3 lines and I suspect Canon will too. The 60D will be along shortly. The 50D was an interim camera.

Market segmentation:
Nikon D90 Canon 50D
Nikon D300s Canon 7D
. . . I guess I haven't been keeping up with the features of every market level of DSLR lately. In regard to Nikon, it looks you could get 2 D90's for the price of 1 D300s when all you really get is better video and a faster fps if you get the 1 D300s. The D90 gives up a little but not much with its viewfinder and AF but it's also a 1/2 lb. lighter than the D300s. Am I missing something here?

. . . In regard to Canon, the 50D looks like it loses a lot in comparison to the 7D with no video and only about an ounce less weight. If the 7D price comes down a few hundred dollars in the next 3 or 4 months to about $1500, and then a 60D comes out for about $1000-$1200(?). Well, I'm just not that clear on what the tradeoffs are for a relatively small difference in price. Is there some chance that a 60D would have even better sensor technology or some other feature that would make it especially attractive in comparison to the 7D? An articulating LCD doesn't seem like enough of a 'feature' to make it more marketable to most serious photographers I'm thinking. YMMV

Sorry, I couldn't resist. ;-)
. . . If the 7D mkII comes along in the next several months with a 1.3x sensor, I'm going to be really sad about having already spent my money on the 1.6x 7D!
