Sand, Sea and Shadows - B&W photos from NW England

I've been concentrating on my B&W photography recently and these are just a few of the many photos that I've taken in the last few weeks in and around the coastal area of NW England where I was born and spent much of my adult life.

They were all photographed using a D40 with either a Sigma 10-20 or a Nikon 16-85vr lens attached.

I hope you like them. I tried to concentrate on things like mood, light & shadow, texture etc, both when I took the original photos and in post processing.

1 - "Struggle for Life"
A pine tree slowly being overwhelmed by drifting sand dunes.

2 - "A Glimpse of the Sea"
Soft sand and spikey marram grass in the dunes

3 - "The Pathway"
Shadows and light in the sand dunes.

4 - "Standing Tall"
Pine trees shaped by the high onshore westerly winds.

The trees in this particular part of the coast are a mix of Corsican and Scots pine and were planted about 100 years ago to try and help stabilise the sand dunes

5 - "Sand Dune Shadows"

6 - "Lines in the Sand"
light and shadow highlighting the wind formed lines in the sand dunes.

7 - "Weather Worn"
A long exposure photo of an old wooden beach protection groyne.

These structures are quite common on this part of the coast where they are used to try and prevent the sand drifting to one end of the beach.
