Leaf is gone...

Is Leaf targeting the prices towards the upcoming 645 Pentax ?

Les, unfortunately, Leaf is gone. Kodak sold their assets (which is a bit different than selling the business) to Phase One a couple of months ago.

There are currently four companies involved in medium format backs and bodies:

  • Shriro, who purchased the Imacon business and the assets of Hasselblad.

  • Fuji, who builds bodies and lenses for Shriro to sell under the Hasselblad name. Shriro and Fuji have supposedly been in negotiations to sell this business to Shriro for about 2 years now.

  • Phase One, who purchased the assets of Mamiya and Leaf

  • Leica, who builds bodies and lenses and purchases electronics and software from Phase One.

Five years ago, there were 18 companies making medium format gear.

If Pentax releases their camera, there will be five companies involved in Medium format. I find it unlikely that they will launch a product in a shrinking, cutthroat market, but stranger things have happened...
