Hi everybody,

One of the tallest buildings in my city is being illuminated with light panels which will change colour and shape for a 2 week arts festival. I'm going to go down this evening and try take some long exposure shots with an OM4. Unfortunately I don't know how to set mirror lock up, any other tips greatly appreciated.

I may bring my e620 along too but am worried I'll get a stuck pixel. I got one a few weeks after purchase but cured it by pixel mapping. That was less than 6 months ago so going to wait until new year to use it for such purpose.

Check the manual out for how to set the mirror lock up. Operationally, the OM4's mirror lock should work the same as the OM4T..

Really? Sounds a bit over-the-top in worrying to me. Just use it...that's why you have it, and that's what pixel mapping is for if you get one.

I think the OM4 did not have mirror lock-up.

The OM4 mirror locks up at the start of the auto-timer delay and the OM4 is good at Auto for long time exposures, so you could use the timer and Auto.

Otherwise, use a cable release with the camera on B setting.

Been too long since I played w my OM-4, but I would think on a long exposure, mirror lock up is less important, as any motion is only a small portion of the whole exposure.

Why wait to use the E-620? Better to test it's limits under waranty then when you'd have to pay for any possible repairs! Just be sure to turn IS off and NR on for long exposures on tripod.

I won't be able to get a cable release in time, oh well, I'll try the multi exposure setting instead I think and see what happens!

Thanks for the link to the manual too

I had to open it up and look too. Like Dominic said, it seems the OM4 in its' various versions does not have the ability to manually lock the mirror. A little suprising knowing it was the top-of-the-line model and does other things so much better than its' contemporaries. That multi-spot metering ability blows away anything the same-period Nikon F3HP or Canon F1n were capable of.
