NAS Question

I'm sort of confused about the use of NAS.

If the NAS is your destination for saving files (archiving?), is not this unit also hard drive based. If a hard drive dies in your computer, why then is a NAS any better? Does NAS have multiple drives and one is a mirror?

I can's see how an NAS offers protection of files while still using a single hard drive (or multiple drives used as a single large drive).

What am I missing?

Thank you,
