I don't know about this Tamron, but you should consider the canon 55-250mm IS. It's cheap, it's small, it's lightweight, it's stabilized, and it's taking great shots for the money. It's the perfect friend for your kit lens. You can use it for portraits of course, even if I think that your canon 50mm will make wonders in this field. Yet it's nice to have some other focal length to try different things. But it will also give you much more reach to catch details, and play with small shooting angles. That's much more affordable than to buy a wide angle for instance.
