How many MP needed for a billboard? The answer may surprise you...

I was talking to the graphic artist at my company who was designing a new billboard. "You need a lot of pixels for a billboard-sized print, don't you?", I asked. "Not really," he replied, and he showed me the working design--it was small enough to fit on his computer screen at 100%. So we're talking maybe 0.25MP. And yet, I've driven by the billboard on the freeway, and you can't see pixels. It looks sharp. It's all a matter of viewing distance.

A huge mural would require a lot of pixels, but in any photo that's designed to be viewed more or less all at once, the bigger the photo, the bigger the viewing distance, and therefore beyond a point, no additional pixels are required as you scale up.
