Mac purchasing help

Looking at buying a new desktop machine. I have a g5 that is several years old. Still works great but is too slow when using Light Room, my primary use of my computers.

I have a MacBook Pro that is a few years old(newer than the desktop) and it's great for traveling, etc.. but I'm guessing that the new machines(even an imac) will still be faster than my macbook pro.

I am wondering if buying a top of the line imac will be sufficient for my needs.

The main added cost for an imac is the 8gb memory option. Not sure if this is necessary for working with still photos-no video.

Hard to compare apples to apples on the apple website between their mac pros and imacs..

Anyone out there have any real world input on using an imac as their primary machine for editing?
