I bought this lens 18 months ago, took it out once, and haven't used it since. Main issue was very unpleasant and unnatural background blur.

Can not say i have paid much attention to the bokeh. If it was really bad i am sure i would have noticed.

You don't seem to have that issue. The head shot and the one of the gull in flight have entirely pleasant and realistic background blur.

I do remember one thing about this lens, especially with moving subjects--keep the VR off, and freeze motion the way our forebears did, by cranking up the ISO and shutterspeed. This was a limitation on my old D80. On the D90 its a nonissue.

Maybe I should give the dust covered paperweight another try?

I think you should. Pointless leaving it on the shelf and if you still are not happy maybe time to auction it off...should get you a bit of cash due to price hikes. Recently sold several Pentax lenses i bought 2 years ago for more than i paid.
