AF speed D700 slower than D3? how come ?

Battery voltage does not determine AF drive speed.

The D2,D3 and 1D series from Nikon and Canon both operate on 11 volts. The F5 used 8 AA batteries instead of 4 in the F-100. Any idea why they do that? I've never read the reasons for it before. Would be interesting to know.
