Why don't you get a nice tele prime instad?

Like the excellent 85/1.8, for instance?
That will be WAY better than either zoom, especially for portraits!
You'll have the classic wide zoom + normal + medium tele...

Don't worry about the "gaps": they'll actually be beneficial in terms of learning which focal length gives which perspective, and help you become a better photographer in the long run.

And you can always use the 35 as a "walk-around", like generations of film photographers have used the classic 50.
