The new version of the Pentax lens cap is a much better set up than the old versions where the pinch clips were only on the outside of the lens cap. As we know, the new versions have the pinch points both on the outside and on the inside so as you can remove or attach the lens cap with the lens hood in place. The trouble is, the centre pich points are smooth and not ribbed with grips, so if you are like me, you sometimes may get sweaty fingers and they can slip of the centre pinch points and the cap slips all over the lens front element or off the lens completely.

My solution is to get some of that tape that they use to put on stairs, so as to add extra grip on the edge of each stair, and cut it to suit the centre pinch points. The tape usually comes in widths of about 40-60mm, so I cut the tape to 4-5mm, which is about the depth of the centre pinch point of the 58mm, 67mm and 77mm lens caps, and use different widths depending on the size of the lens cap. You've got no idea how much better and more positive this is when attaching and removing the lens cap. Here is what it looks like in situ

Funny enough I use that rubber beading you can get for windows:

But that grip tape sounds a much better idea.

Great suggestion Lance!

I generally don't have too much of a problem to remove the cap, but holding on to it is indeed no as easy at times. Esp since I prefer to have the lens hood on always (never inverted). Now I generally hold the front of the lens up an drop/push/check the cap in place to make sure I don't accidentally drop it on the ground.

I like the new caps BTW. I even got an extra one (77m) for my K28/3.5 Shift. But this addition is indeed an improvement!

I instead replaced most of my lenscaps with Tamron ones.
Much better quality, IMO.

Great idea! I had used sandpaper to get a rougher texture on mine, which is an improvement, but now I must try your idea.

I haven't seen these lens caps before and they seen a big improvement over the old ones. I've replaced my caps with cheapo's, because I always keep the hood on the lenses. I also like your extra improvement! It's looking really good! Thank you for the idea.

With kind regards,

Jos

Great idea, Lance.
I'm having the same problem with my DA* lenses.
What do you call this tape?
Maybe a link can help to find one in the store, thanks again.

I am not sure, Herman.

I am sure you can get it from most hardware stores. Just ask them that you want the tape that goes on stairs to give more grip. It is like coarse sandpaper with a self adhesive surface on the other side.

If you cannot find it, send me your address and I will send you some in the post. :-)

A few have asked where to get this tape and what it is called. I don't know what they call it, but it is mainly used on stairs to give more grip. It is like coarse sandpaper and has a self adhesive on the other side.

Most hardware stores should have this or it is possibly sold by safety type stores.

If anyone is having trouble obtaing this stuff, I could post some to you as I have a complete roll of it. You really only need about a 100mm length of it at most if it is about 50mm wide.

Pentax need to mould about 3 fine ribs here so your fingers grip and then they would be nigh perfect.

Agreed, and one wonders why they didn't do this to start with. I mean, it is an oversight that really wouldn't have cost them anything in the manufacturing set up.

Actually, if you had a ribbed piece of metal the size required to fit on the pinch point, you could heat it up and melt the ribs into the pich point. :-)
