This is not accurate. In a 14-bit value, the last bit does double the range of data, but it does not contain half the data. But I think you know that.

Have the data range is used to represent the brightest "stop", with half the remaining range for the next lowest "stop", etc. I'm sure you know this, but thought I would mention it for the sake of others.
