Performance degradation at DPReview???

All of a sudden tonight I'm finding a huge performance degradation when I visit DP Review. I have linked most of the performance issues to those screens that show the "BlockBuster" ad. It seems to eat up more than 50% of my CPU. DPR pages that don't show "Blockbuster" ads seem OK. But if I refresh the same page and a "BlockBuster" ad appears my CPU is hosed again.

Anyone else experiencing the same thing?

I never see those ads, 'cause I have'm blocked. In general, and lately...as usual...DPR is of the fastest forum sites I visit.

Check to see if you have the latest version of Adobe Flash-
Could be your anti virus program too.
Works very quickly on my old laptop without blocking (just for reference)
 
It's any of the Flash ads. They're all horribly CPU intensive. The Blockbuster ads though are even worse than the others, especially when there are two of them on a page. I wish that dpreview would dump all Flash ads, there's no reason that a site's ads should be CPU intensive. Unfortunately I doubt it will happen, which will lead users to install ad blockers which will decrease ad revenue for dpreview.

To dpreview:

Come on guys, look at all the threads about this. Do the right thing and switch to an ad network that doesn't use Flash.

So happy to use Firefox.. When i have to use IE at work, i almost get epileptic seizures from all the blinking, desperately annoying ads i never see in my Firefox.

I'll have to try Firefox with the blockers.

I can't even type this message easily due to the lag time. This is ridiculous. I've never had this problem in over 5 years at DPReview. All of a sudden it starts tonight.

I sent a bug report about the same issue to dpreview the other day but haven't receive any confirmation. My computer, running the latest version of Firefox and Flash froze up completely with 100% CPU usage (an old system). I am now running Adblock on dpreview and have no more issues. It is definitely associated with the horrible Blockbuster ad.

I actually chose not to engage Adblock on dpreview because I wanted to see the local (Austrlaian) businesses selling camera gear but am happy to forego that for now.

since my last Firefox update 3.5 i think i have had some trouble with the forum formatting cant copy paste etc

Indeed,

I notice things go a bit slower after the update of Firefox, not only on this forum but also at several other sites as well. Not sure if it are the Blockbuster ads to remember you which movies to download by bittorrent, I think it has more to do with the update itself

Go into the news discussion forum and you will see that many are having this problem and Phil has confirmed that it is definitely to the Blockbuster ad and he is working to get it resolved with a 3rd party company.

HOWEVER, some people are getting around it my using Firefox or other browsers that support 3rd party ad blockers such as Flashblock.

I noticed a big slowdown also this morning when I visited and figure it is a temporary thing. But if it is connected to the adds, that is a sign that profit from adds is the why depreview was purchased not too long ago.

I too started having this problem the other day. I'm running Opera and I noticed that when the Blockbuster ad was shown the CPU would peg at 100% and the browser would hang.

I initially solved this problem by disabling plug-ins in my browser and that worked fine.

Then, even though I had the most current version of Flash running, I went and re-installed Flash. I also updated the Java VM at the same time (I had a very current version but not the latest). Now I've re-enabled the plug-ins and the Blockbuster ads display without hanging the machine.

Yes -- even with Flashblocker installed, I still run into pages (eg, the home page) that use 98 percent of my CPU and bring the computer to a grinding halt.

It's gotten to the point where I no longer can leave a browser sitting on dpreview unless I'm actively browsing it and planning to do nothing else.
