Looking at the specs for the Tokina 16-50 and the Sigma 18-50 (the only lenses I might have considered instead of the Nikkor) both have a substantial front extension when zoomed out and it's the extension tube (two in the case of the Tokina) that takes the bayonet hood. That, IMO, would make them far more vulnerable to knocks than the Nikkor, whose hood is attached to a substantial fixed metal outer barrel.

This is slightly surprising for the Tokina, which I have always regarded as very sturdy (witness the old 28-70 F2.6 ATX Pro!).
