You might consider the Tokina ATX Pro 16-50 f/2.8. I find it a very nice lens. It may not be equal to the Nikkor in all respects, but it's half the price. I find the Tokina ATX Pro line to be great lenses.

I agree. I had already bought a 17-55 and wanted a "two lens - light travel kit". To complete the line-up I have just bought a Tokina 50-135 ATX Pro. It's excellent - in some respects beats the Nikkor both optically and mechanically.

So I now worry - did I make a dreadful mistake getting the 17-55 (at nearly £1000) when I might have got a lens of near equal (if not superior) performance in the Tokina 16-50 for about half the cost?

I should have known better perhaps - I already had a Tokina 12-24 and a rather well used 28-70 F2.6 ATX Pro and can vouch for their quality.
