If you stick with the Nikon brand, the cheapest that will work for you is the SB-600 - and you're probably going to spend about $200-$250 for one on eBay, more in a store.

I've forgotten what the equivalent Canon model is, but they're about as expensive.

Now you can find several e-TTL/i-TTL flash units that have powered zoom heads that rotate and tilt, which will give you the coverage you're looking for - and they're usually running around $120-$150 on eBay (new) and about $160-$199 in stores. These also are 'dedicated' units which mean if you buy one, it will fit only one brand of camera so you'd have to buy yet another unit if you switched from one camera manufacturer to another.
