I need advice (digital newbie) on the settings for shooting action photos of kids sporting events. I plan to shoot on speculation, post the images to a website for sale. Fulfilment at a lab with most images being printed 8x10 or smaller. Maybe an occasional 11x14. Using Sigma 2.8 zoomlenses, with a 1.4X converter. sRGB color space or Adobe? Jpeg fine or raw, sharpening or not. Any advice is appreciated.I will also output to an Epson 7600. Don

If you have Nikon Capture 2 or 3, then by shooting RAW every settings will be irrilevant, as you can always teak them in post production, apart from White Balance in some situations, when it could be difficult to get the right results even in post production.
My 2 cents!

It ultimately depends on what/where you will be shooting...

outside/daytime?
outside/night?
inside/flourescent?
inside/incandescent?

Will you be able to use flash? (typically, no)

Are you looking to freeze action or portray movement?

Will you be looking to isolate a subject, show the subject in the 'mix' or take group shots?

Those variables will determine the necessary shutter, aperture, ISO and WB settings. For sports, shutter-speed is usually the most crucial focus point. Stopping action is typically the desired effect (I assume this, but your situation could be different). If so, try to keep your shutter at or above 1/500 (not gospel).

I, personally ALWAYS shoot RAW, Adobe color space, sharpening off (though this does not matter in RAW).

If you give a few more environmental details, perhaps I or someone else could be more specific.

Good luck!

I will primarily be shooting outdoors in daylight. But I will also be shooting football at night. I do not have Nikon Capture software. By settings I didn't mean exposure. I meant sRGB color space or Adobe, and raw vs. fine jpeg, etc. Thanks, Don

I shoot it in RAW compressed and usually have the color space set to Adobe. In Capture 3, I can modify the color space so that really isn't to important.

If I were shooting jpeg fine it's a different story. I would only use Adobe if I intended to process the images in Photoshop. If I intended to print or post to the web straight from the camera, I would use sRGB since the D1 series doesn't tag the jpgs properly and, even if they did, most programs can't handle it. Also, proper white balance, contrast settings and sharpening are important using jpgs. However, I can't recommend a setting for those unless I know how you're post processing.

At night, with higher ISO settings, I tend to use low contrast and no sharpening so that the noise doesn't pop out on the image.
