USB feeds 5V, and can be used to charge batteries, provided something on the other end of the USB lead can deliver enough current. The D300 would need more than 5V to charge the battery (which is 7.4V), but it could take the USB 5V power feed and up-convert it to charge the battery. The USB spec (v3) allows a load of 900mA, I think, but you can have charger devices that can deliver more, so that wouldn't be a problem.

However, as others have said, the D300 doesn't charge the battery from the USB!
