Canon 60D possibly on the horizon

"There are rumors buzzing around the internet that Canon was not happy with the sales of the 50D. So, they have apparently made it a point to go out and attack Nikon and the success that they have had with their D300.

If reports are correct, Canon's next mid-level DSLR body, the 60D, will ship with a new 12.1 MP APS-H sensor. That would be the same sized sensor that is featured on their 1D series pro bodies. The APS-H sensor is in between the size of a full frame 35mm camera and the APS-C sensor that is found on most of Canon's consumer bodies. The APS-H sensor gives a crop factor of 1.3x, as opposed to the 1.6x made by the APS-C, therefore making it closer to full-frame sized, and also probably not compatible with Canon's EF-S line of lenses optimized for the smaller APS-C sensor. That may be an issue for some Canon owners looking to upgrade bodies, since it is a possibility that some of their lenses may not work with their new purchase.

It is also stated that the 60D will feature a version of the 1D's superior autofocus system and the same build quality as the 5D Mark II. It is expected to stay close to the 6fps mark that the current model hovers around. The hopes is that it will launch around the $1999 price point.

Canon could definitely use a bump in the prosumer market. Their 40D was a phenomenal success, which was followed only a year later by the lackluster sales of the 50D. If the rumors hold up, the 60D should be exactly what people are looking for in a prosumer body. A proven autofocus system with more AF points, a larger image sensor, great build quality, and a nice framerate. Throw in HD video and its golden.
Now the waiting begins.... "
